Census Golf Club Tournaments
TieBreak Procedure

The Census Golf Committee and Competition Sub-Committee have implemented the following Tie-Breaking Procedures for all match play events (e.g.., Director's Cup, Individual Club Championships, Four-Ball Tournament). The Census Golf League is exempt from this procedure and tie breaking for league play is at the discretion of the Census Golf League commissioner.

If a match is tied after play, the tie shall be broken in one of the following ways and in this order of precedence:

1. Sudden Death on the same course, immediately following play, at an agreed upon hole, preferably the first hole. If this is a handicapped event, strokes fall on the sudden death holes as they occurred during previous play. First side to win a hole will be declared the match winner.

2. If Option 1 is not available due to darkness, course policy, etc., the tie shall be broken by the results of the 3 lowest handicap holes on the scorecard (Holes marked has handicap 1, 2, and 3). By the scorecard, the side with the most wins over these 3 holes will be declared the winner. If after these 3 holes there is still a tie, the 4th lowest handicap hole (hole marked as Handicap 4) shall be used to break the tie, and so on. In the case where opponents have the same course handicap and no strokes were allocated during regulation play, the person with the highest USGA index shall use his/her handicap line on the scorecard to determine the three tiebreak holes.

Now for the fun part ... :))

When there is a 4-Ball match played across mixed tees with different handicap lines on the scorecard, strokes are allocated to players as they were in regulation play with the 3 tiebreak holes determined as follows:

  • if there are two differing handicap lines on the scorecard, two lines will be used for two holes of the tiebreak and the other line will be used for one hole of the tiebreak.

  • a coin shall be flipped to determine which side's handicap line should be used twice (the coin flip does not produce a team's option/choice, it should be flipped to determine which handicap line is automatically used twice)

  • the handicap line to be used twice (for this example, let's say the Men's Handicap Line) will use it's handicap hole 1 as one of the tiebreak holes

  • the handicap line used once (for this example, let's say the Women's Handicap Line) should then use it's lowest, and unique from the first tiebreak hole, as a second tiebreak hole

  • the third tiebreak hole is determined (back to the Men's Handicap Line) to be the lowest, and unique from the previous two tiebreak holes

  • if the match is still tied with no majority of holes won across the three tiebreak holes, the fourth hole to be used would be the next lowest, and unique, hole from the Women's Handicap Line, and so on, alternating between two handicap lines until the tie is broken.

  • in the rare case where three different handicap lines are in play, each handicap line will submit its lowest, and unique, handicap hole as one of the three tiebreak handicap holes (coin flips may be needed to determine order).

Questions and clarifications about this Step 2 provision may be discussed with the CGC Competition Committee. This procedure with scorecard images as examples can be found on the CGC website under the Tournaments link.
